Both laterals, Towne, PA are the reccomended projections; SMV is another projection but it is rarely done unless injury impact to superior part of skull.

On the basis of ALARA, both Laterals would not necessarily be done. Blunt Force Trauma is usually side specific so chose that one to be closest to the Imaging Plate.SMV, or Basal Projections, are used for base of skull injuries though that might limit achieving the correct position. A collimated version is often done to identify the angles of the Mandibular Condyles for reference when positioning for plain film JMJs. However, these are becoming less prevelent, as are Skulls in general, with the advent of OPG/TMJs, Cone Beam Volume Tomography and CT. Regards Gary Allbutt Do you find this valuable? |

If CT is reasonably available, the value of a skull x-ray series should be bought in to question. If CT is available, I would be concerned that skull x-rays were being used to confirm/exclude anything - the potential for false negatives or positives is simply too great, especially considering how critical the region is.
