What is the exposure index?
Sep 7 2009, 5:59 PM EDT | Post edited: Sep 7 2009, 5:59 PM EDT
I thank you for these exposure factors but unforturnatly there is no comment on the exposure index these techniques create. Don't you think this should also be posted for those to review?

There are many factors that could alter the exposure index. Grid ratio, generator type etc. This is a good starting point, but no technique chart is universal. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

The exposure index is completely different for each manufacturer, these are just ballpark figures to guide new students how the exposures vary with different parts of the body. Its really just a starting point.

I may have jumped the gun, but I belive they are refering to the number that CR vendors use to indicate the level of overall exposure for an image. I belive that Agfa for example is looking for an index of between about 1.5 and 2.0. I think Carestream (Kodak) uses 1500-2000. The idea is that any image that does not fall within this range needs to be repeated even though it may be possible to post process an image to make it visually acceptable. I've always thought of the exposure index as a quality control. An exposure that is a little too high, for example, will produce a lovely image, but at increased patient dose. In that case the exposure index is a tool that lets you know that yes, you have a nice image (unless burnt), but you needlessly exposed that patient. An under exposure, with a below range exposure index, is more visibly noticeable, as exposure is proportional to noise in CR, but may still be perfectly acceptable for gross anatomy (FU #, perhaps?) The skill and judgment of the tech are more important then the number on the screen. It's simply another tool to help us give the best quality service.

Another thing to consider is that exposure index can be completely different for identical technique depending on factors like collimation, centering and even cassette size.

The exposure index is a tool you can use to evaluate the exposure. The exposure index is gained from the histogram (amount of black / white on the image). 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

The exposure index seems to vary alot from what ive seen (patient to patient) - The department where I have just been as a student on placement didnt pay any attention to it at all. What do others think of this? Do you find this valuable?

Ive been working with film for the past 20 years and our department has just gone CR, does anyone know of some good tutorials on exposure indexes? Do you find this valuable?

Becouse the exposure index is unique to each manufacturer of CR equipment, the best source for that is your vendor.
