Intussusception


This is the most common cause of acute abdominal pain in children aged between 6 months and 2 years.
A segment of bowel is seen to telescope into another, ileo-colic is the most commonly seen and is usually located in the RUQ, ascending or transverse colon.

Assess:
  • Terminal ileum and colon for evidence of intussusception
  • Other causes for abdominal pain if intussusception is not found
Documentation:
  • Transverse and longitudinal views of the
    • ascending colon
    • transverse colon
    • descending colon
    • rectum
If intussusception seen:
  • At intussusception site:
    • trans views + clipstore
    • long view + clipstore
    • trans view + colour Doppler
  • long view of pelvis midline for free fluid
If intussusception not seen:
  • trans view of SMV/SMA
  • Both kidneys - long and trans
  • trans pancreas
  • RIF for appendix and/or mesenteric nodes
Differential Diagnosis:
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Malrotation and volvulus
  • Pancreatitis
  • Pylonephritis
  • Appendicitis
  • Mesenteric Adentitis
