Ultrasound
Welcome to the Ultrasound section of wikiRadiography!
Here you can add, edit, and read everything about ultrasound.
Ultrasound is a high frequency sound based diagnostic imaging technique used to visualize solid organs, muscles, tendons, arteries nerves and veins and can assess their size and structure. Ultrasound is also used to visualize a fetus throughout pregnancy
Ultrasound scans are performed by medical health care professionals called Sonographers.
- Ultrasound is generally regarded as a "safe test" because it does not use ionising radiation as in x-ray but it is a form of energy, and scans should only be performed for a suitable medical indication by trained operators.
- The biggest danger of ultrasound is often considered to be misdiagnosis by untrained operators.
- US scans have been used to image the human body for at least 50 years and is currently one of the most important, widely used, and versatile imaging modalities in medicine.
- The technology is relatively inexpensive and portable, especially when compared with modalities such as magnetic resonance and computed tomography
- It poses no known risks to the patient, when used by appropriately trained professionals for medical indications
