There is five digits of the foot. The hallux also known as the big toe is the medial most toe of the foot and is counted as digit I.

The toes from medial to lateral are:

  • Big toe (hallux) - 1st digit
  • Second toe - 2nd digit
  • Third toe - 3rd digit
  • Fourth toe - 4th digit
  • Little toe - 5th digit
The metatarsals consists of the five long bones of the foot, which are numbered from the medial side (I-V). The base of the 5th metatarsal is a common fractue site.
