Ultrasound scanning guidelines

Pyloric Stenosis

Assess:
  • Stomach contents
  • Pyloric muscle length, muscle thickness, diameter
  • Response of pylorus to peristaltic waves
  • Stomach emptying
  • Under Ultrasound control warm glucose water is slowly introduced. Sufficient water (20-40cc) is used to act as an acoustic windows to visualise the pyloric canal and observe response to peristaltic waves
Documentation:
  • Pylorus measurements are obtained:
    • Length of pyloric canal
    • Transverse diameter of pylorus
    • Transverse muscle thickness
  • Observation and clipstore of peristaltic waves passing or attempting to pass the pylorus
  • If no abnormality detected in pylorus check SMA / HA orientation for malrotation/Kidneys for hydronephrosis
Once examination is complete, excess water can be aspirated
