When performing paediatric chest x-rays there are three important factors to be considered. 1. Correct positioning. 2. Setting correct exposure factors. 3. Patient movement control.
The success in correct positioning and the movement control depends on the experience of the technologist who should be able to get the maximum coorporation of the child. The setting of the exposure factors would not be a problem if CR or DR is available.If the conventional film-screen sustem is used using low kV results in a good contrast. A high speed system will help to reduce the exposure time and hence the less risk of movement blur. If exposed in supine position beamangulation of 5-10 degrees caudally will project the anterior ribs down avoiding distortion.
If the child cannot follow the breathing instruction, observe te child and expose at the correct momemt at the end of inspiration.
