Muscles of the Shoulder Region

Deltoid
  • Origin - Lateral third of clavicle, acromion, and spine of scapula
  • Insertion - Deltoid tuberosity of humerus
Axillary
  • Action - Abducts, adduucts, flexes, extends, and rotates arm medially
Supraspinatus
  • Origin - Supraspinous fossa of scapula
  • Insertion - Superior facet of greater tubercle of humerus
Suprascapular
  • Action - Abducts arm
Infraspinatus
  • Origin - Infraspinous fossa
  • Insertion - Middle facet of greater tubercle of humerus
Suprascapular
  • Action - Rotates arm laterally
Subscapularis
  • Origin - Subscapular fossa
  • Insertion - Lesser tubercle of humerus
  • Nerve - Upper and lower subscapular
  • Action - Adducts and rotates arm medially
Teres major
  • Origin - Dorsal surface of inferior angle of scapula
  • Insertion - Medial lip of intertubercular groove of humerus
  • Nerve - Lower subscapular
  • Action - Adducts and rotates arm medially
Teres minor
  • Origin - Upper portion of lateral border of scapula
  • Insertion - Lower facet of greater tubercle of humerus
Axillary
  • Action- Rotates arm laterally
Latissimus dorsi
  • Origin - Spines of T7 T12 thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, ribs
  • Insertion - Floor of bicipital groove of humerus
Thoracodorsal
  • Action - Adducts, extends, and rotates arm medially
