Ultrasound protocol for scanning of the breast

Method of investigation:

  • In general breast ultrasound should be restricted to investigation of a palpable mass
  • Assessment and documentation can be restricted to the quadrant of the mass
  • If a complete examination is required by the radiologist then this should be performed using the technique outlined below

Assess:
  • Breast echotexture
  • Axillary region
  • Palpable massess including manual palpatation
  • Scan systematically in radial pattern from areola outwards when surveying breast
Standard documentation:
  • Clockwise planes (document using 1-12 o'clock)
  • Long / transverse areola
  • Axillar view
  • For consistency keep the groove on the transducer towards the nipple when documenting in clockwise planes
  • Document masses in long and transverse with annotated clockwise position and if appropriate the number of cm's from nipple
